Utilization tells you how much of a lending pool is already borrowed. When most capital is on loan, suppliers often earn more APY, but less cash sits ready for withdrawals. A sharp rise in lending APY can mean strong borrow demand, tightening liquidity, or both. You need context to know which.

Utilization = Total borrowed ÷ Total supplied
As a percentage, utilization answers a simple question: how much of the pool is already on loan? Whatever is not borrowed sits idle, ready for withdrawal subject to protocol rules and caps.
Money markets pay suppliers from borrower interest. When utilization is low, much of the pool earns nothing because nobody is borrowing it. As utilization climbs, borrowers compete for scarce liquidity and pay higher rates. Suppliers earn more per dollar deposited.
The tradeoff is exit flexibility. High utilization means less idle cash waiting for withdrawers. You may earn more and find it harder to leave quickly if demand stays elevated.
Protocols like Aave set a target utilization, often near 80%. Below that target, borrow rates rise gradually as utilization increases. Above it, the curve steepens. The goal is to discourage further borrowing and encourage repayments or new supply before liquidity runs out.
That kink is why supplier APY can jump quickly during leverage rallies. You are not imagining it. The math is designed to move fast in stressed markets.
It depends what you optimize for. If you want yield and plan to stay put, high utilization can mean higher supplier APY. If you want to withdraw on short notice, high utilization is a warning sign.
Above roughly 95%, full immediate withdrawal may be impossible until borrowers repay or new suppliers arrive. A high APY with high utilization is worth a closer look, not a blind yes.
At 100% utilization, every supplied asset is borrowed. Your withdrawal waits on incoming repayments, fresh deposits, or protocol buffers like reserve factors. Some markets queue exits during stress. Dashboard TVL is not the same as cash you can pull today.
TVL tells you how much is deposited. Utilization tells you how much of that deposit is on loan. A market can have deep TVL and high utilization at the same time, or shallow TVL with wild utilization swings. Read both on the protocol UI when you can.

On Aave, open the market page for your asset and chain. Utilization appears beside supply APY, total supplied, and total borrowed. Morpho and Compound show similar fields with different layouts. If an aggregator shows a high lending APY but utilization on the protocol UI looks extreme, trust the protocol view for liquidity planning.
