Key takeaways

Key takeaways

  • Neither USDC nor USDT wins every week. The leader depends on chain, protocol, and borrow demand.
  • USDT often appears in more legacy liquidity venues; USDC leads on some newer L2 lending markets.
  • Issuer, reserve, and depeg risks differ even when headline APY looks similar.
  • Converting between stablecoins for yield adds bridge, spread, and tax friction you should model first.
  • Yield.ly updates the comparison from qualified dashboard market data, not static rate tables.

The answer in 30 seconds

Neither USDC nor USDT wins every week. The leader depends on chain, protocol borrow demand, incentive programs, and how much of the headline rate is base lending yield versus token rewards. Issuer and reserve risks differ even when APY looks similar. Use live medians and TVL, not a static blog post, before you pick one stablecoin for yield.

Featured answer

Compare best qualified APY, median APY, 30-day history, and combined TVL for each asset. The winner varies by observation.

As of Oct 6, 2026, 6:17 PM UTC, qualified USDC best APY is 7.62% (USDC (Euler) on Monad) versus USDT at 15.29% (WETH-USDT (Uniswap V3) on Ethereum). Median qualified rates sit at 4.00% for USDC and 3.11% for USDT. USDT leads on top qualified APY in the latest data.

Why USDC and USDT APYs differ

USDC and USDT are both dollar stablecoins, but they do not share identical liquidity footprints on every chain. Borrowers choose the token their strategy needs. Suppliers earn from whoever pays to borrow that token in that market. A 2% gap between USDC and USDT on the same chain often reflects different borrow demand, not a permanent quality ranking.

Same peg, different markets

USDC and USDT aim for $1. Lending APY diverges when utilization, incentives, and pool depth differ between USDC markets and USDT markets on a given chain.

Borrowing demand drives the spread

Traders borrow stablecoins for leverage, basis trades, and cross-exchange workflows. USDT still dominates some legacy venues and OTC flows. USDC leads on several newer L2 deployments and regulated-facing products. When more leverage loops want USDT on Tron-linked workflows or USDC on Base lending, supplier APY follows the busy token.

Read utilization rate and where stablecoin yield comes from to connect borrower behavior to the rate you see.

Opportunities differ by chain

Ethereum mainnet may show deep USDC and USDT pools on Aave with long history. Base and Arbitrum often skew toward USDC in newer markets. A chain where your preferred token has thin TVL can advertise a high APY that does not fit a large deposit. Compare chain hubs and filter both assets on the dashboard.

For Base-specific USDC context, see best USDC yields on Base. For Arbitrum stablecoin rows, see Arbitrum stablecoin yields.

Liquidity and withdrawal friction

A higher APY on USDT does not help if utilization is pinned near 100% and you need to exit tomorrow. USDC markets with deeper TVL sometimes trade a lower headline rate for easier withdrawals. Check TVL, 30-day median APY, and utilization on the protocol market page before you switch tokens for yield alone.

See APY vs TVL and APY history for context beyond the latest reading.

Reserve and issuer differences

USDC is issued by Circle with monthly attestations and regulated redemption channels. USDT is issued by Tether with a different reserve disclosure history and banking footprint. Both have survived multiple stress cycles, but depeg severity and recovery paths have not been identical. Yield differences do not remove issuer risk.

Many users hold one stablecoin for operational reasons and only consider switching when the APY gap covers bridge fees, spread, tax friction, and the time out of market. Model those costs before you chase a modest rate edge.

Historical comparison, not a permanent winner

Neither USDC nor USDT wins every week. The metrics table on this page shows best current APY, median rates, and TVL from qualified market data. A token that leads today may lag next month when incentives rotate or borrow demand shifts. Compare 30-day medians, not only the top row.

Why DeFi APY changes explains the drivers when leadership flips between assets.

Which stablecoin fits which user?

  • Already holding USDC: compare top USDC rows before paying spread to swap into USDT
  • USDT-heavy treasury: prioritize deep USDT markets on chains you already use
  • Issuer-conscious allocator: weigh reserve transparency alongside APY
  • Rate maximizer with size: verify TVL and exit liquidity, not only headline APY

Filter USDC and USDT together on the Yield.ly dashboard. Thrive.fi glossary ↗ defines stablecoin and APY terms if you want parallel vocabulary while you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Does USDC or USDT earn more interest?

It changes week to week. Compare best qualified APY, median rates, and chain coverage in the live tables above rather than static blog rankings.

Is USDC or USDT better for DeFi yield?

Depends on chain, protocol depth, issuer preference, and whether you optimize for base APY or total APY with incentives.

Why does USDT sometimes have a higher APY than USDC?

Borrow demand, utilization, incentive campaigns, and which chains host deep markets all differ between Tether and Circle venues.

Should I convert USDT to USDC for yield?

Model bridge fees, spread, tax friction, and whether the APY gap persists after conversion. A small rate edge may not cover migration costs.

Best place to earn yield on USDT?

Filter the dashboard to USDT and sort by base APY, total APY, or TVL depending on your priority. The opportunity table lists current qualified rows.

Best place to earn yield on USDC?

Same approach: use live qualified rows, check 30-day medians, and read observed risk on each opportunity page.

USDC or USDT for passive income?

Both can work in deep lending markets, but issuer, reserve, and depeg risks differ. Neither label guarantees safety or durable yield.
